Tips for gig day
Nothing clever here. Each tip comes from someone's bad night.
The days before
- Ask what's in the booth. The venue or promoter can tell you which players and mixer they have. Put the player into Playproof's Gig prep page and the rest follows.
- Don't update your DJ software or player firmware in the last days before a gig. If you have to, check your stick afterwards.
- Bring more than you'll play. A set planned to the minute rarely survives the room. Plan the main path with the set builder, and keep a folder of tracks that fit around it.
The night before
- Make two sticks. After the USB export, choose Make the backup stick to copy the first onto the second.
- Check both with the stick check, set to the player you'll meet.
- Charge wireless headphones, and pack a wired pair anyway.
In the booth
- Plug in early, during the previous DJ's set if they're happy with that, so the player has read your stick before you need it.
- Load a track and listen in your headphones before your first mix, so you know the stick and the player work.
- Record your set, from the mixer's record output if it has one.
- Save your history afterwards, from your DJ software or the player. Playproof needs it to make your tracklist.
After
- Make the tracklist while you still remember the set. Playproof does the listening; you check the names.
- Notice what worked. The library map shows the mixes you come back to again and again.
